Twitter Reacts to the Champions League draw

UEFA Champions League draw of the round of 16

This is a feature that I used to occasionally do on Touchline Talk, where by I take a look at tweets around something that has happened in the world of football.

Yesterday saw the Champions League Last 16 draw, including three English teams. Chelsea and Manchester City both come up against sides they faced in the competition last season, PSG and Barcelona respectively, whilst Arsenal arguably got the easiest draw out of the English sides, as they will play AS Monaco.

Reigning champions Real Madrid will face Schalke, whilst their city rivals and last season’s beaten finalists, Atletico Madrid also play a German side – Bayer Leverkusen.

There are two other clubs left in the competition from Germany as Bayern Munich were drawn against Shakhtar Donetsk, and in a repeat of the 1997 final, Borussia Dortmund will play Juventus. The final tie sees FC Basel, who knocked out Liverpool, come up against FC Porto.

So how did Twitter react to draw?

It looks a very tough draw for Manchester City, especially as they were knocked out by Barcelona at this stage last season…

For the Catalan side, their star player boasts about being good on FIFA as well as in real life

From tough ties, to one that seems relatively easy for Arsenal. Plus, the Gunners didn’t get Bayern!

One outspoken Gunners fan was happy with the draw. But still managed to criticise his club…

Meanwhile, other fans labelled Arsene Wenger a “genius” after Borussia Dortmund, who finished above Arsenal in Group D on goal difference got a harder draw than the Gunners – against Juventus.

That tie will bring back memories of the 1997 final, including this beautiful goal from Alessandro Del Piero, who is still going strong in the Indian Super League aged 40.

English fans have already thought about those away ties to France and Spain.

Chelsea received £50 million for David Luiz in the summer, and the Brazilian will return to Stamford Bridge, whilst Yaya Toure also faces his former club.

Like Manchester City, Real Madrid face the same opposition that they did in last season’s round of 16. Schalke 04 were beaten 9-2 on aggregate in 2013-14…
