It’s been a while since the last ABC World Cup update, but the recent flurry of international football means that I return to you with news that Brazil remain the holders.
On Sunday 7th, without Neymar who had scored in the Champions League final the day before, the Selecao beat Mexico 2-0 in a friendly thanks to first half strikes from Philippe Coutinho (his first goal for his country) and Diego Tardelli.
Another friendly against Honduras followed yesterday (Thursday 11th), and in a pretty much uneventful game in which rain poured throughout, Roberto Firmino’s goal just after the half hour mark gave Brazil a 1-0 win.
Dunga’s side now go into the Copa America, which began yesterday as hosts Chile beat Ecuador 2-0. Brazil’s first game comes on Sunday though, as they face Peru in the Group C opener. Colombia and Venezuela complete the group. If they win the group, it is likely that they will face Paraguay. So, can they win the tournament and go unbeaten?
Paddy Power have them as second favourites at 10/3, behind Argentina, who are 15/8. There’s a high possibility that they could meet Lionel Messi and co in the semi-finals. There’ll be another ABC World Cup update following the conclusion of the group stages (21st June), to see if we have a new winner. For now though, here’s a reminder of Brazil’s staggering record so far…
