With another international break comes another ABC World Cup update, but it’s a rather short one on this occasion. That’s because Chile, who gained the crown by winning this summer’s Copa America, played just one game this month – a 3-2 victory against Paraguay in Santiago
Chile took the lead after seven minutes when a defensive blunder from a Paraguayan player allowed Felipe Gutierrez to beat goalie Anthony Silva. They did not seem to miss key midfielder Arturo Vidal, who left Santiago during the week for personal reasons, and dominated the first half against a Paraguayan team mostly made up of players from the local league.
Paraguay looked renewed during the second half with Jonathan Fabbro and Jorge Benite scoring within two minutes of each other before Chile’s Sanchez and Jorge Valdivia, however, became more influential on the match. Gutierrez then scored his second goal after a Mauricio Isla cross before Sanchez sealed the win in the final 10 minutes.
Chile’s next four games are all 2018 World Cup qualifiers in October and November against tough opposition, meaning we could see the ABC World Cup trophy change hands again, perhaps back to a team who has previously won it. Here are the fixtures:
- Chile vs Brazil (9th October)
- Peru vs Chile (13th October)
- Chile vs Colombia (13th November)
- Uruguay vs Chile (17th November)
There will of course be updates in both months, and here is an entire history of the ABC World Cup since it started in July 2014.
